Apple Unveils AirPods 5 with 50% Stronger Open-Ear ANC

Apple has introduced AirPods 5 with up to 50% stronger open-ear ANC, a new multiport acoustic architecture, Siri AI and Live Translation. Prices start at $129.

Apple AirPods 5

Apple has introduced the new AirPods 5, retaining the familiar open-ear design while significantly improving active noise cancellation and acoustic performance.

According to Apple, AirPods 5 can reduce external noise by up to 50% more than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. The new model also introduces a redesigned multiport acoustic architecture, next-generation Adaptive EQ, improved Transparency Mode, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Siri AI features and Live Translation.

50% Stronger ANC in an Open-Ear Design

The biggest change in AirPods 5 is the improvement in noise cancellation without abandoning the open-ear format.

Unlike in-ear models that use silicone tips to seal the ear canal, AirPods rely on a more open fit. That design can feel more natural and less intrusive, but it also makes strong noise cancellation more difficult to achieve.

Apple says the new acoustic architecture and updated computational audio algorithms allow AirPods 5 to reduce external noise by up to 50% more than AirPods 4 with ANC.

Transparency Mode has also been refined to make voices and environmental sounds feel more natural.

Adaptive Audio automatically adjusts the balance between noise cancellation and transparency depending on the surrounding environment, while Conversation Awareness lowers media volume when the user begins speaking.

New Multiport Acoustic Architecture

The acoustic system has also been redesigned.

AirPods 5 use a new multiport acoustic architecture together with next-generation Adaptive EQ.

A custom high-excursion Apple driver and high-dynamic-range amplifier are combined with inward-facing microphones that monitor what the listener is actually hearing and adjust the frequency response in real time.

Rather than relying only on stronger ANC, Apple has reworked the airflow and acoustic pathways inside the earbuds to improve performance while preserving the open-ear structure.

H2 Chip and Personalized Spatial Audio

AirPods 5 are powered by Apple’s H2 headphone chip.

They support Personalized Spatial Audio with Dynamic Head Tracking, which uses head movement to stabilize the perceived sound field during music and video playback.

Voice Isolation and studio-quality audio recording are also supported, along with dual beamforming microphones, inward-facing microphones and motion- and speech-detecting accelerometers.

Bluetooth 5.3 is used for wireless connectivity.

Siri AI and Live Translation

AirPods 5 also expand their role beyond conventional audio playback.

When paired with a compatible iPhone, users can access Apple’s latest Siri AI features hands-free and continue conversations without needing to interact directly with the phone.

Head gestures are also supported, allowing users to respond to Siri by nodding or shaking their head.

Live Translation can assist conversations between people speaking different languages when AirPods 5 are connected to a compatible Apple Intelligence device.

Availability of individual AI and translation features may vary depending on language and region.

Two Charging Case Options

AirPods 5 are offered in two configurations.

The standard AirPods 5 include a USB-C charging case and are priced at $129 in the United States.

AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case add support for USB-C, Apple Watch chargers and Qi-compatible wireless charging. The case also includes a speaker for Find My.

The higher-tier version also introduces stem-based swipe volume control to Apple’s open-ear AirPods lineup.

Up to 5 Hours with ANC Enabled

Battery life differs slightly between the two versions.

Standard AirPods 5 provide up to four hours of listening with ANC enabled and up to 20 hours when used with the charging case.

The Wireless Charging Case version increases listening time to up to five hours with ANC enabled and up to 22 hours including the case.

Both versions provide around one hour of listening from approximately five minutes of charging.

IP57 Dust and Water Resistance

Durability has also been improved.

AirPods 5 carry an IP57 rating for dust, sweat and water resistance, expanding their suitability for exercise and outdoor use.

Each earbud weighs approximately 4.3g, keeping the lightweight character that has long defined the standard AirPods design.

Apple Continues to Push Open-Ear ANC

Most premium true wireless earbuds now rely on sealed in-ear designs because they make it easier to deliver strong bass response and effective noise cancellation.

AirPods 5 take the opposite approach.

Apple is continuing to develop the open-ear format while narrowing one of its biggest disadvantages compared with sealed in-ear models: isolation from external noise.

The redesigned acoustic architecture suggests that Apple still sees open-ear earbuds as a distinct category rather than simply an entry-level alternative to AirPods Pro.

By combining stronger ANC, updated acoustics and deeper AI integration without changing the fundamental fit of AirPods, the company is continuing to refine a design that has become one of the most recognizable formats in personal audio.

Starting at $129, Available September 18

AirPods 5 are priced at $129 in the United States, while the version with Wireless Charging Case is priced at $149.

Pre-orders begin immediately, with general availability scheduled for September 18.

With stronger open-ear ANC, a redesigned acoustic architecture and expanded AI features, AirPods 5 represent Apple’s latest effort to improve the traditional AirPods experience without moving to a sealed in-ear design.
