Apple has announced the second-generation HomePod mini 2, adding S10-powered computational audio, future Siri AI features, a new Sound Glow interface and, most notably, support for a four-speaker wireless surround setup when paired with the latest Apple TV 4K.
Priced at $149 in the U.S., HomePod mini 2 will go on sale on October 30, 2026.
The most significant change is not simply the arrival of a new smart speaker, but the way Apple is expanding HomePod into a broader home-theatre system. With the new fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, users can now build a front-and-rear four-speaker configuration using compatible HomePod models.

S10-Powered Computational Audio
HomePod mini 2 is powered by Apple’s S10 chip, enabling more advanced real-time computational audio processing.
Apple says the system continuously analyses music and adjusts dynamics, output and acoustic behaviour in real time. The fundamental 360-degree acoustic concept of the original HomePod mini remains, but with substantially more processing power behind it.
HomePod mini 2 can still be used on its own, as a stereo pair or as part of a multi-room system.
Apple has also expanded Mac integration. On supported Macs, HomePod mini 2 can be selected as the default audio output device for music, movies, games and FaceTime calls.

Four HomePods for Wireless Surround
The biggest audio change arrives when HomePod mini 2 is paired with the new fourth-generation Apple TV 4K.
Apple now supports a four-speaker wireless surround arrangement, with a pair of HomePods at the front and another pair at the rear.
The system automatically detects the position of each speaker in the room and adjusts timing and playback levels accordingly.
Second-generation HomePod models can also be used in the same system, although Apple requires the speakers within each front or rear pair to be the same model.
That means, for example, two full-size second-generation HomePods can be used at the front, with two HomePod mini 2 speakers at the rear.
Rather than asking users to manually configure channel delays and levels, Apple’s approach is to handle speaker placement and synchronization automatically through Apple TV.
Not a New AirPlay Standard
The new four-speaker surround feature is significant for network audio, but it should not be confused with the introduction of a new AirPlay or AirPlay 2 specification.
Apple has not announced a new lossless transmission format, codec or major AirPlay protocol revision as part of this launch.
The change is instead about system integration within Apple’s own ecosystem: multiple wireless speakers, automatic placement recognition, timing correction and TV integration are all managed as one coordinated system.
For audiophile users, the interest lies less in a new transport format and more in how tightly Apple is integrating wireless playback and room-aware speaker behaviour.

Sound Glow Adds a Visual Element
HomePod mini 2 also introduces Sound Glow, a new visual feature built into the top interface.
The lighting system reacts to album artwork colours and changes in bass and treble energy during playback, while ambient soundscapes such as rain can trigger dedicated visual effects.
It does not directly affect sound quality, but it reinforces Apple’s positioning of HomePod as both an audio device and part of the wider smart-home environment.

Siri AI Is Coming Later
Apple is also promoting future Siri AI functionality as one of the major software features of HomePod mini 2.
The updated Siri experience is expected to use personal context and Apple Foundation Models to improve conversational interaction, music search and integration with apps such as Messages, Mail and Calendar.
However, these AI features will not be available at launch.
Apple says Siri AI will arrive later through a free software update, initially in English across selected markets including the U.S., UK, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa.
Some personal-context features will also require an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad.

Apple TV 4K Becomes the Centre of the System
The new fourth-generation Apple TV 4K serves as the control hub for the four-speaker HomePod setup.
Apple TV manages speaker position detection, synchronization and level calibration, allowing the HomePods to operate as a coordinated home-theatre system without a conventional AV receiver.
Apple has long allowed users to pair HomePods with Apple TV for television audio, but the new generation extends that concept from a stereo pair to a full front-and-rear four-speaker arrangement.
The new Apple TV 4K is available for preorder from October 15 and will go on sale on November 13.
$149 and Five Finishes
HomePod mini 2 will be offered in Pink, Green, Blue, White and Midnight finishes.
U.S. pricing is $149, with preorders beginning October 13 and general availability starting on October 30, 2026.
Apple says the product will initially be available in more than 23 countries and regions. Korean pricing and availability have not yet been separately announced.
HomePod mini 2 does not reinvent Apple’s smart speaker hardware, but it does significantly expand the role HomePod can play in the home.
For audiophile and home-theatre users, the most interesting development is not Siri AI or the new visual interface, but Apple’s move toward a more integrated wireless surround ecosystem built around automatic speaker placement, synchronization and centralized control through Apple TV.
