Audio-Technica ATH-AL5NC Debuts as the Brand’s First Wireless Open-Back Headphones

Audio-Technica has introduced the ATH-AL5NC, its first wireless open-back headphones, featuring 53mm drivers, LDAC, active noise reduction and up to 75 hours of battery life.

ATH-AL5NC

Audio-Technica has introduced the ATH-AL5NC, its first wireless open-back headphones. While open-back designs have traditionally been associated with wired hi-fi listening and studio monitoring, the ATH-AL5NC combines an open acoustic structure with Bluetooth connectivity, long battery life and active noise reduction.

Audio-Technica has long offered open-back models through ranges such as the R-Series and ADX-Series. The ATH-AL5NC extends that experience into wireless listening, targeting users who want the spacious presentation of an open design without giving up the convenience of smartphones, laptops and everyday portable use.

53mm Drivers and an Open-Back Acoustic Design

The ATH-AL5NC uses specially developed 53mm dynamic drivers.

Unlike closed-back headphones, an open-back design allows airflow behind the driver rather than sealing the rear of the earcup. This generally sacrifices isolation and increases sound leakage, but can also reduce internal reflections and pressure, helping produce a more open and natural sense of space.

Audio-Technica is using that architecture to give the ATH-AL5NC a broad, spacious presentation while keeping the overall design relatively lightweight for extended listening.

The headphones weigh approximately 240g, making them suitable for longer music, work and gaming sessions.

LDAC for Up to 24-bit/96kHz Wireless Audio

Wireless connectivity is handled over Bluetooth, with support for SBC, AAC and LDAC.

LDAC allows compatible devices to transmit high-resolution audio at up to 24-bit/96kHz, and the ATH-AL5NC carries Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification.

Notably, aptX-family codecs are not supported. The codec lineup therefore follows a relatively simple structure: AAC for Apple devices and LDAC for compatible Android hardware.

Multipoint connectivity is also supported, allowing the headphones to remain connected to two Bluetooth devices, such as a smartphone and a computer.

Active Noise Reduction in an Open-Back Headphone

One of the most unusual features of the ATH-AL5NC is the inclusion of active noise reduction despite its open-back construction.

Because the earcups remain acoustically open, the system does not attempt to isolate the listener in the same way as a conventional closed-back ANC headphone. Instead, it is primarily intended to reduce persistent low-frequency environmental sounds such as air-conditioning noise or traffic rumble.

The result is a different approach to noise control: rather than sealing the listener away from the surrounding environment, the ATH-AL5NC attempts to preserve the open-back presentation while reducing some of the most intrusive background noise.

The system also includes protection against feedback that may occur if the earcups are physically covered, temporarily disabling noise reduction when necessary.

Sound Leakage Reduction

Sound leakage is another inherent characteristic of open-back headphones.

Because the rear of the driver is exposed, music can be audible to people nearby, making open designs less suitable for quiet offices or shared environments.

The ATH-AL5NC addresses this through a Sound Leakage Reduction function available through the Audio-Technica Connect app.

It does not transform the headphones into a sealed design, but it is intended to reduce one of the practical limitations normally associated with open-back listening.

Up to 75 Hours of Battery Life

Battery performance is another major strength.

The ATH-AL5NC offers up to 75 hours of continuous playback on a full charge.

Fast charging provides up to eight hours of use from approximately 15 minutes of charging, making the headphones well suited to extended listening, remote work and travel.

A supplied 1.2m audio cable also allows the ATH-AL5NC to be used as a wired headphone when Bluetooth is not required or the battery is depleted.

Features for Calls and Gaming

The ATH-AL5NC is designed for more than dedicated hi-fi listening.

Built-in microphones allow it to be used for calls and online meetings, while the Audio-Technica Connect app includes a low-latency mode for gaming and video.

The app also provides access to EQ, sound settings and Bluetooth configuration, allowing users to tailor the headphones for different listening environments.

This places the ATH-AL5NC somewhere between a traditional audiophile open-back headphone and a modern wireless everyday model.

A Rare Open-Back Alternative in the Wireless Market

Most premium wireless over-ear headphones are built around closed-back earcups and increasingly aggressive ANC.

The ATH-AL5NC takes a very different approach.

Instead of maximizing isolation, Audio-Technica is prioritizing the open, spacious presentation associated with traditional open-back headphones, then adding LDAC, active noise reduction, sound leakage control and long battery life around that acoustic concept.

The decision to support SBC, AAC and LDAC while omitting the aptX family reinforces that positioning. Rather than trying to cover every Bluetooth ecosystem, Audio-Technica has focused on a straightforward music-oriented path for iOS and compatible Android devices.

As the company’s first wireless open-back model, the ATH-AL5NC represents an interesting attempt to bridge traditional audiophile headphone design and modern wireless convenience.

Priced at $279

The Audio-Technica ATH-AL5NC is priced at $279 in the United States.

The package includes a 1.2m wired audio cable and carrying pouch.

By combining a 53mm open-back driver system with Bluetooth, LDAC, active noise reduction, sound leakage reduction and up to 75 hours of battery life, the ATH-AL5NC introduces a relatively unusual alternative to the closed-back ANC headphones that dominate today’s wireless market.
