Sonos has begun rolling out Sonos 27, the next generation of its audio operating system. The update goes beyond a conventional app refresh, introducing AI-based control through external agents such as ChatGPT and Claude, new ways to use portable speakers within a home-theater system, and a broader rethink of how Sonos devices interact across the home.
Sonos has spent more than two decades building a multi-room audio ecosystem, but with Sonos 27 the company is placing even greater emphasis on the idea of an audio operating system rather than a collection of individual speakers. The new platform is designed to connect speakers, soundbars, portable products, headphones and AI services within a single software environment.

ChatGPT and Claude Can Control Sonos
One of the most notable additions is Sonos 27mcp, which launches in Early Access.
Sonos 27mcp is based on Model Context Protocol, or MCP, an open standard designed to connect AI models with external applications and services. Through this framework, compatible AI agents such as ChatGPT and Claude can interact with a Sonos system to control music playback, volume, rooms and groups.
The concept moves beyond traditional voice assistants that respond to a fixed set of commands. Instead, Sonos is opening its system so that the AI agent a user is already interacting with can also become an interface for home audio control.
In practical terms, this could allow users to continue a conversation with an AI assistant and ask it to start music in a particular room, adjust the volume or control multiple Sonos zones without switching to the Sonos app.
Sonos says the long-term goal is to avoid tying the platform to a single AI provider, allowing users to choose the agent that best fits their workflow.

Sonos 27voice Focuses on Music
Alongside external AI integration, Sonos is also developing its own music-focused assistant called Sonos 27voice.
Rather than functioning as a general-purpose AI assistant, Sonos 27voice is intended to focus on music discovery, mood and playback control. Users will be able to describe a situation or atmosphere without necessarily knowing a specific artist or track, and the system can respond with appropriate music or playlists.
That could include requests based on everyday situations such as preparing for the day, dinner, a party or winding down in the evening.
Sonos 27voice is expected to arrive later this fall, while Sonos plans to go further in 2027 with Sonos Custom Agents, which will allow users to configure an agent’s model, personality and voice.

Portable Speakers Can Become Surround Channels
Sonos 27 also expands the role of portable speakers within the Sonos ecosystem.
With the new Portable Surrounds feature, two compatible portable speakers such as Move 2 or Sonos Play can be used as rear surround channels in a home-theater setup.
The important part is not simply that portable speakers can be assigned as surrounds. Sonos is using its system software and positioning technology to make the role of those speakers more flexible depending on where and how they are being used.
A pair of portable speakers can function independently during everyday use and then be brought into a home-theater setup when needed as rear channels.
This reflects Sonos’ broader strategy of treating individual products as flexible parts of a larger audio system rather than devices with a single fixed role.

Headphones Become Part of the Sonos System
Sonos 27 also introduces Headphone Linking, extending the ecosystem more directly into personal listening.
The feature is scheduled to enter Early Access on September 29 and will initially support Sonos Ace Ultra. It allows audio playing through a Sonos system to be moved to headphones and then transferred back to speakers.
Sonos has traditionally focused on multi-room speakers and soundbars, but Sonos 27 brings portable speakers and headphones more deeply into the same networked audio environment.
The result is a more unified system in which listening can move between rooms, speakers and headphones without being treated as separate experiences.

A Redesigned Sonos App
The Sonos app is also receiving a revised navigation system as part of Sonos 27.
The new interface begins rolling out from September 8 and allows users to rearrange music services, manage recently played content and interact with the queue more directly.
On iPhone, playback controls are being expanded through the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island, while support for presets, Siri and Shortcuts is also being improved.
The iPad interface and system-status tools are receiving updates as well.
Sonos 27 is a free update for products that support Sonos S2, although features such as Portable Surrounds and Headphone Linking depend on compatible hardware.

Sonos Is Expanding Beyond Traditional Network Audio
The significance of Sonos 27 lies less in any single feature than in the broader direction of the platform.
Sonos is moving beyond simply supporting streaming services or wireless playback protocols. The company is building an environment in which speakers, soundbars, portable products, headphones and external AI agents can operate as parts of the same system.
The introduction of MCP support is particularly notable because it opens Sonos control to general-purpose AI platforms rather than limiting users to a proprietary voice assistant.
As network audio continues to evolve, competition may increasingly depend not only on supported streaming services, codecs or hardware specifications, but also on how effectively an audio system can integrate with AI agents and adapt to different listening environments.
Sonos 27 offers one of the clearest examples yet of that shift.

Rolling Out from September 8
Sonos 27 began rolling out on September 8, 2026 as a free update for Sonos S2-compatible products.
The new app navigation, Sonos 27mcp and Portable Surrounds are among the first features to arrive, while other capabilities will be introduced in stages.
Sonos 27voice is expected later this fall, with Custom Agents planned for 2027.
Rather than reserving the new platform exclusively for new hardware, Sonos is extending many of these capabilities to existing products through software updates, reinforcing its strategy of developing Sonos as an evolving home-audio platform rather than simply a hardware brand.
